TET OFFENSIVE
By: Alexa Y.
New year festivities in Vietnam are known as Tet. In 1968, villagers, who took advantage of Tet, streamed into cities across South Vietnam to celebrate their new year. Many funerals were held for the war victims. The coffins contained weapons and many of the villagers were Vietcong agents. The Vietcong launched an attack on over 100 towns and cities and 12 U.S. air bases in South Vietnam that night. They even attacked the U.S. embassy and killed five Americans. The Tet offensive continued for about a month until the U.S. and South Vietnam forces re-gained control of the cities.
